Cold Water Anemone DiveOne of our Staff members, Angelita, went above and beyond to move a couple of giant green sea anemones in our North Pacific exhibit. Diving in 53 degree water is not for the faint-of-heart to move these amazing invertebrates. Way to go girl!

Pistol ShrimpAt the Aquarium of Boise, we have a special partnership between a Back-Ray Goby and a pistol shrimp (Alpheus sp.). It provides a watchful eye while the shrimp digs a burrow for them to share. Just watch out for the pistol shrimp, which can shoot a "bubble bullet" that reaches speeds of 100 km/h (62 mph) and releases a sound reaching 218 decibels. The snap can also produce sonoluminescence from the collapsing cavitation bubble. As it collapses, the cavitation bubble reaches temperatures of over 5,000 K (4,700 °C). The snapping is used for hunting (hence the alternative name "pistol shrimp"), as well as for communication.

StingraySometimes stingrays get a bit of a bad rap . . . because of the whole "sting" part. However, the stingray uses its venomous barb to defend itself when it feels threatened by other predators. Stingrays were not usually vicious and rarely attack and kill humans. Our stingrays are often quite sociable, like our Southern Atlantic Stingray "Ms. Piggy," who regularly comes up to get hand fed and head rubs at the side of the pool. #SharkWeek #Stingray Note: the stingrays barbs at the Aquarium of Boise are regularly clipped.
