Start by reading the following information to better understand the problem and the propaganda put in place to misguide and mislead us all. Then at the end of this article there are links to file reports to lawmakers and other industry entities that are there to protect us from being defrauded from false representations who profit from “Best of” scams across the Country.

Q: Are “BEST of” Awards and Contest SCAMS

Well folks we decided to find out with the help of the World Wide Web and a little research via Google and simply compare the BAD with the so-called GOOD schemes and breakdown how some of the RULES may be a bit different but the underlying goal and true achievement here is making a profit of course just like every other for-profit business.

In order to ANSWER the question above we’ve taken the time and effort gather some articles written by respectable experts and journalist regarding this matter, some definitions from the dictionary and other statistical information and then we did a detailed analysis of some of our local “BEST of” award and CONtest schemes here in Idaho.

Our findings aren’t illogical or absurd folks in fact they’re quite logical and reasonable and we believe this issue needs to be brought to the attention of not only the local community consumers but more importantly to the small business owners who fall prey to this fraudulent format that’s goal is not to actually prove and provide an honest metering or monitoring rom unbiased sources to render an honest result and promote a true winner but rather garner free co-promotion of themselves from those so-called selected nominees and eventual winners being fleeced by the company, it’s platform promotion and putting on the entire misleading messaging and the misguiding of hard working business individuals everywhere.

If the TRUTH hurts those pro porting this process but HELP educate the PUBLIC and the BUSINESS community then we’ve achieved our GOAL to reduce the defrauding of both here in Idaho.

Why Most Business “Awards” Are a Scam, Preying on Pride

Photo adapted from “2015 Stevie Awards 0215” by mikeg44311 (Flickr, Creative Commons).

Years ago, one of my clients used to pridefully boast that he’d been recognized as one of the top consultants in his field. Here’s how that sort of thing usually transpires:

• First, you get a letter and/or a call with the exciting news — you’ve been selected!

• The letter goes on to say that only a small percentage of people in your field have been so recognized.

• As a result, your company is going to be listed in a published source (usually a business magazine).

• The listing is free!

But… “Why not hype the honor?” they ask.

I should have saved the 2015 one, eh? It would make for a nice collection. Of course, no award is ever sent to winners — unless they pay for it. Here’s their language on that:

BBB Tip of the Week: “Best of …” lists may be business scam

Sun., July 10, 2016

Veronica Craker

There’s a new trend with lists honoring the “Best Small Towns,” “Best Place for Happy Hour” and even “Best Cup of Coffee.” Some of these “best of” lists even send prizes to the destination or business getting the award people and businesses who do exemplarity work in the area.

Unfortunately, even fun competitions such as these have attracted scammers hoping to profit from businesses wanting to claim the “Best of” title. In the past few months the Better Business Bureau has received multiple reports from organizations across the country stating they received a suspicious email claiming they won top billing. But in order to claim their prize they were asked to pay up. Fortunately, the email recipients were smart to report the email —as there is no such award.

In less than a month BBB Scam Tracker received 24 reports from potential victims in the Northwest. Some of the reports claim they were asked to pay anywhere from $149 to $229 to claim the honor and receive a personalized plaque. One of these scam emails even had a Seattle, Washington address as its place of business. However our investigators believe that is likely false information meant to deceive email recipients.

The company names attached to these emails include: The Award Program, Business Recognition and Award Connections. So if you get an email from any of these businesses, be skeptical.

To avoid being taken in by these CON artists BBB recommends the following tips:

Ask questions. Learn everything you can about who is giving the award. If it is coming from a mystery company, chances are they simply want your money. Businesses and organizations that offer legitimate awards will usually be willing to provide detailed information on why a specific company received the award.

Know the nomination process. Find out who nominated your business for the award. If you didn’t apply for it or the group cannot tell you how you were nominated, chances are the award is not legitimate.

Don’t pay. Most legitimate awards do not come with costs to the recipient. If there is a cost, scrutinize it closely. If there is a fee for winning or for receiving a certificate or plaque it could be a SCAM.

Do your research. Check the company’s BBB Business Review at to ensure the offer is legit. Many of the business owners who reported the SCAM to BBB did their own investigating and found we’ve reported on this SCAM in the past.

Companies that have fallen victim to these or other SCAMS are encouraged to report their experience to Better Business Bureau at 206-431-2222 or at

You Won An Award, Now What

Hey Rob I got an email saying my business won an award…is this real?

Yes and No…let me explain.

The award itself is real…the winning is not.

There is no committee in your town that goes around determining who gets this particular award.

The company behind the false awards makes their money by preying on companies and selling them awards.

Yup, they are in the award selling business.

And that beauty of an award pictured above is selling for about $200.

Hey, showing off fancy awards gives fans, friends, followers, clients and your momma a belief that you’ve achieved something…I get it.

But buying an award is NOT the way to go about building authority and trust.

And when consumers realize that the awards you are displaying have been bought for the sheer purpose of building authority and trust…well, your credibility is shot and no amount of money or awards can restore that.

Stay away from this type of award SCAMS.

Here’s what to look for if and when you get the email saying you were selected as a winner of this so-called coveted award.

I am happy to tell you that (Your Company Name) was chosen for the 2018 Best of (Your Town) Awards in the category of Advertising Agency. The Best of (Your Town) Award was created to acknowledge the best businesses in our community. For additional information please visit us at: (website that goes to the award scam website)

If needed for reference – your code is: DKMV-UBCQ-2EBB Congratulations, Blake Thompson Best of (Your Town) Awards
Phone Number: 888-207-3442

Directly from the Award Scam website…

How does this award help my company?

Displaying this award in your place of business has several benefits for your company:

• Strategic Value

Today, small businesses and entrepreneurs are facing the challenges of an increasingly competitive local economy. While many businesses have taken on various initiatives to continue to grow, a select few have been able to benefit from the strategic value of business awards.

• Sales Tool

Paula Arnold, owner of SmarterTech Business Systems, learned firsthand from a former manager that a business award can be an account executive’s ace-in-the-hole. “Used effectively, business awards are yet another sales tool to aid in the close of business,” says Arnold.

Free Publicity

Steven Anderson, manager of Devon Health Corp. understands the value of award competitions. Anderson says, “We believe it (business awards) helps validate what we do in the company and enhances our ability to keep good people.” PR might be difficult to measure on the bottom line but it is invaluable.

As you can see, not only did we receive an offer of an award, but the same offer was made to one of our clients, a martial arts studio just a few miles away from us. Same wording in the email as we received, same look and feel to the award itself and same promises made. Nope, not a legitimate award…just a legitimate way to sell awards.

Yes, all of that mumbo jumbo is true to an extent. The strategic value, the sales tool and the free publicity. But it’s all based on a false sense of achievement

Then it goes on…

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the (Your Town Here) Award Program?

Each year, in and around the (Your Town Here) area, the (Your Town Here) Award Program chooses only the best local businesses. We focus on companies that have demonstrated their ability to use various marketing methods to grow their business in spite of difficult economic times. The companies chosen exemplify the best of small business; often leading through customer service and community involvement. For most companies, this recognition is a result of your dedication and efforts as well as the work of others in your organization that have helped build your business. Your team is now a part of an exclusive group of small businesses that have achieved this selection.

There is an error in my company information – how can I fix this?

Changes to your company’s name, city, or category can be submitted to us via our Company Information Change page.

Do I have to pay for an award to be a winner?

No, you do not have to pay for an award to be a winner. Award winners are not chosen based on purchases, however it is your option, to have us send you one of the 2018 Awards that have been designed for display at your place of business.

Shouldn’t my award be free?

No, most business organizations charge their members annual dues and with that money sponsor an annual award program. The Best of (Your Town Here) Award Program does not charge membership dues and as an award recipient, there is no membership requirement. We simply ask each award recipient to pay for the cost of their awards.

Where can I find my Award Code?

Your Award Code is: DKMV-UBCQ-2EBB. This Award Code has been provided for you that may be used for direct access to your award options and press release posted on our website. Please reference this Award Code with any correspondence or calls to us.

Am I the only winner in my business category?

Yes, only one winner is selected per category for each town.

Where can I see the list of this year’s winners?

Notification to other award winners in (Your Town Here) will be made over the next several weeks. After all award recipients have been notified, we will post the complete list of winners on our website.

Can the award be for a larger area than my town?

All 2018 Awards are issued based on the location of your corporate headquarters even though your service area may extend beyond that town.

How do I view the press release?

Your press release is available here: (Your Company Name) Receives 2018 Best of (Your Town Here) Award.
You may use, reproduce, distribute, and display the press release in any media formats and through any media channels you choose.

How can I contact you?

We offer various ways to get in touch. The most efficient is via our contact us page. Emails sent to us via this page are prioritized first by our customer service staff. Alternatively you can call us at 888-509-9915. Select option 1 and reference your award code: DKMV-UBCQ-2EBB.

As you can see the toll free number given in the original email doesn’t match the email in the contract information in the last question. The whole thing is just a giant ruse to get you to shell out monies for a fake award and there is absolutely zero credibility in getting this type of an award.

Inbound Marketing Services

Rest assured… Our inbound marketing services will help your company grow by allowing you to focus on what you do best.

Why Inbound Systems?

1. We don’t outsource overseas like other agencies do.

2. Your campaign will be personalized to meet your marketing goals, not our revenue goals.

3. We’ll track results to help make sure you’re making a profit from your inbound marketing.

Depending on your needs and goals, below is just a handful of the inbound marketing services we’ll assist you with:

A profitable marketing campaign starts with a plan. Inbound marketing is our primary area of expertise, so we’ll consult with you to develop a comprehensive inbound marketing action plan to meet your objectives. Once we’ve delivered your inbound marketing plan, the next step is to determine whether or not we’re a good fit work together on an ongoing basis. If we are, then great!

Campaign Manager

Breathe a sigh of relief… You don’t have to worry about which inbound marketing strategies to implement throughout the year. As an ongoing client, you’ll be able to take advantage of regularly scheduled consulting sessions with your Campaign Manager. After each call, you’ll walk away with a specific set of action items to implement. And if you need help with implementation, we may be able to assist you with that as well.

Anyone can run an inbound marketing campaign. But not just anyone can run it to consistently improve visibility, drive traffic, captures new leads, and nurtures sales opportunities. Your Campaign Manager will be there every step of the way.

Blog Topics

Your online presence grows with each new blog post you publish. We’ll help you develop an easy plan for blogging, complete with new and intriguing topics for each post.

Social Media Strategy

We’re not talking about the joke-of-the-day here. Our approach to social media is one that is aimed to drive results (i.e. relationships, visitors, leads, and sales). We’ll consult with you on how to streamline your social media strategy.

Reputation Management

Whether you manage it or not, you have an online reputation. With the ReviewJump web application you’ll be able to automatically manage and get more 5-star reviews on local directories like Google and Yelp. This is a must-have for brick-and-mortar businesses.

Press Releases

Some of our competitors will send out press releases because it’s on a checklist they’re required to complete. We, on the other hand, encourage doing them with a strategic purpose, thus generating optimal media exposure for our clients.

Local Optimization (SEO)

Want more visibility in Google’s local search results? The strategy of optimizing your online presence is tedious and constantly changing. We can manage this painstaking process for you in a worry-free fashion while helping you to get more phone calls from the local search results.

Link Building (Off-site SEO)

Expand your online exposure beyond your own website and boost your search engine optimization. We’ll help you get published on other websites to increase both referral and organic search engine traffic.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC)

Adding a pay-per-click campaign to your inbound marketing strategy can not only drive targeted traffic to your website, but it can also provide valuable keyword data otherwise hidden by Google. Using this information, we can also enhance the effectiveness of your SEO campaign.

Funnel Development

Are you methodically leading your website visitors and leads down a specific marketing funnel? First, we’ll help develop the strategy for your marketing funnel. Then, we’ll direct the content strategy and help you implement it. The result: A predicable flow of leads.

Lead Magnets

Once visitors arrive at your website, are you capturing their information with anything other than a “contact us” type of form? This gap between the time visitors arrive at your site and when they are ready to contact you is a marketing fail. Most visitors will leave as strangers unless you give them a reason to tell you who they are! We’ll help you develop lead magnets to overcome this and convert more of your visitors into leads.

Book Publishing

We’re talking about real-life, printed books here. Not only will authoring a book improve your authority and reputation, but it can also be used as an effective lead magnet.

Landing Page Content

An optimized landing page is a tool that includes intriguing copy, an offer for a lead magnet, and a form that captures your visitors’ information. The entire goal here is to convert your website traffic into leads. Best of all, we can show you what to do.

Website Content

Original text and images are crucial to converting your website traffic into leads. If needed, we’ll direct an expert writer to write your optimized website content.

Call it a virtual seminar or an online training, a webinar can be an effective tool for your inbound marketing campaign. We help arrange everything from the webinar’s outline, to the writer of the script, to the screen recording and publishing.

Autoresponder Emails

Once you have a lead, now what? Are you diligently following up with them and staying top of mind throughout the entire buying process? We can strategize with a copywriter to create an automated email campaign that will nurture your leads until they buy from you.

Yes, they work. And they can work well, If your eNewsletter content is interesting enough. We’ll help you develop a custom eNewsletter to make it easy to keep in constant contact with your audience.

“Our inbound marketing systems help companies grow by freeing them to focus on what their business does best.”

Clearly we can see that Inbound knows how to use various marketing techniques to entice consumers and companies alike to garner interest in their messaging.

Inbound Marketing Pricing

Although we don’t have one-size-fits-all pricing, we do offer pre-defined, inbound marketing solutions that are as flexible as an Olympic gymnast! Pricing for our inbound marketing services fall into 4 distinct categories:

#1: Plan

INVESTMENT: $500-$4,000 (one-time)

A builder isn’t going to build your custom home without a set of plans, right? Well, the same should go for your inbound marketing campaign.

First, you need a plan. And you don’t need to create one either because we have an available done-for-you solution. To get going, just contact us today at (208) 246-8982.

#2: Software

True, you can walk from New York City to Los Angeles, but why when you can ride a bike? …drive a car? …fly a plane? Software can take your business where you want to go much more efficiently. Even then, some tools are better than others.

WordPress, HubSpot, Infusionsoft, MailChimp, LeadPages, OptimizePress, and so on. There are countless software tools available to manage your inbound marketing campaign. We’ll help you decide which ones to utilize and, in the process, provide access to discounted rates as available.

#3: Consulting

INVESTMENT: $500-$12,000+ (no contract)

At the core of any profitable inbound marketing campaign is a sound strategy. This is where Inbound Systems steps in. Even if you implement your entire marketing strategy in-house, you can utilize your Campaign Manager as a resource and to guide you every step of the way.

Best of all, our interests will be aligned with yours. As consultants, we’ll have to continually earn your business because we don’t require long-term contracts. You know as well as we do, that’s rare when it comes to marketing agencies!

#4: Services

INVESTMENT: $200-$13,000+

An inbound marketing campaign would not be complete without the creation and publication of optimized, engaging content.

Whether it’s SEO, PPC, CTA’s, LP’s, LM’s, or other strategies, if we’re not able to provide you with the services required by your campaign, we’ll help you hire a reputable service provider who can.

We can also see that Inbound Systems is in the marketing business and charges various pricing for it’s services which are not free.

There’s absolutely NO mention on this Idaho site nor the Utah site whatsoever about their “Best of” marketing plan and how the two companies function together. Why you might ask? Also notice they have a location and the same similar scheme going on in Salt Lake City Utah.

Here’s the Nomination Claim Form found on the SLC site (3/8/2022) which was recently removed from the Idaho’s Best of website.

Note the statement at the bottom of the form that states:

Are you interested in sponsoring Best of SLC this year?*

We are unable to put on these awards without the support of our sponsors. In return for their generosity, we heavily promote them on our website, social media, emails, and our Best of SLC Magazine.

Let us know if you’re interested and we’ll provide you with more information. Thanks in advance!

(The “*” just after the question means this is a required answer that must be answered when claiming your nomination solicitation)

Here they also make a claim that they’ve somehow partnered with the BBB in SLC giving you the feeling that the CONtest is approved and certified by the BBB.

Here’s the so-called list of Nominees and the businesses chosen by the local residents which was actually a list created by Inbound System and then disseminated to a narrow and limited portion and number of the public that were encouraged by the Inbound solicitation list of Nominees to participate and vote in the propaganda polling process.

(This page was also not visible from the Idaho’s Best website on the date of this article creation 3/8/2022)

Here’s a look at what’s on the Idaho’s Best website as of 3/8/2022 and you don’t see the BBB claim or ad here.

2022 Business Award Finalists to be Announced Soon

We’re recognizing the best businesses and places in Idaho.

You’ve known Idaho’s Best for running the biggest and most credible “best of” business awards program in Idaho. We are pleased to announce that our Idaho’s Best Business Awards are back for 2022!

And just as you would expect from Idaho’s Best, we do things a bit differently—better, if you will.

Free participation, fraud prevention, online reviews, BBB ratings… These are just a handful of ways we change the game for business awards.

Learn more about our business awards and keep any eye out for the nominees that we’ll be announcing in January.

Special Thanks to Our Platinum and Gold Sponsors!

Would You Like to Get Involved As Well?

Whether or not you’re an Idaho’s Best finalist, perhaps you can join us as a sponsor for our next awards.

If you’re interested, please contact us.

Just come right out and say the obvious, would you like to purchase an Award for your business? It’s very clear that these high end sponsors have been mightily rewarded with “Idaho’s Best” business Awards whether they were mislead or misunderstood that the entire process is flawed and fraudulent. You can’t claim fraud protection when your promoting it and for sponsors to participate. There should be disclaimers for the publics protection that explain and define this false claim and the unscientific manner in which winners are chosen.

(Below is the sponsorship page for Idaho’s Best on 3/8/2022)

Sponsorship Packages

THANK YOU!  It takes more resources to run these awards than you may expect. Offering your generosity by sponsoring helps to keep the entry fee at $0.00 for nominees.

We packed as much value as possible into these packages. If you have any questions, please contact us. Just note, although sponsorships do not guarantee placement in the final results of the awards themselves, they do guarantee access to purchase event tickets and exposure to our audience throughout Idaho.
