KOENIG VINEYARDS

hand-crafting small lots of fine varietal wines

About Us

Koenig Vineyards was founded in 1995 with the goal of hand-crafting small lots of fine varietal wines from the Sunny Slope District of Idaho’s Snake River Valley.

The unique volcanic and alluvial soils of the Sunny Slope District combine with Idaho’s high-altitude, arid climate of sunny days and cool nights to produce wine grapes with ripe flavors and balanced natural acidity. It is our ultimate goal to discover vineyard sites and practice wine-growing methods that best convey the remarkable terroir within this exciting up-and-coming viticulture appellation.

Minimal intervention in the cellar and dedication to traditional winemaking craft allowed our founder, Greg Koenig to curate a winemaking style that the new owners, James and Sydney Nederend have adopted.

It is our goal to bottle wines indicative of their vineyard origin. Varieties produced include Viognier and Syrah – varieties that do exceptionally well in Idaho – as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Sangiovese, Petite Sirah, Chardonnay and Port-style dessert wines using spirits from the Koenig family distillery. Occasional weather conditions also allow for the production of Ice Wine and botrytis-infected late-harvest wines.

Koenig Estate Vineyards

LOCATION: Our Tasting Room location was chosen not only for the sweeping views of the valley, but for the south facing slope on which it sits. Located in the heart of the Sunny Slope Wine District, our warm summer days, and cool nights allow for slow, consistent ripening of the grapes. It’s elevated position along the slope allows for additional frost protection during cold winter nights.

WINES: Big, bold reds have become a hallmark of Koenig Vineyards. Our Estate Vineyard is responsible for some of our most beloved wines, including our Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah Blend, CSPV Blend, and our Reserve Estate Blend.

VINES: 3 acres Syrah, 1 acre Zinfandel, 3 acres Cabernet Sauvignon, 2 acres Petite Sirah, 1 acre Petit Verdot.

SOIL: Large gravel and sandy loam create healthy vines that naturally produce low yielding crops.

LOCATION: Established in 2016, Lanae Ridge Vineyard sits on a spectacular slope situated in the Chalk Hills above our Winery. Our own Estate Zinfandel and Lanae Ridge’s terraced Zinfandel sit merely 200 feet apart.

WINES: Lanae Ridge owners, Jay & Shelly Hawkins, established Lanae Ridge with the goal of creating the highest quality grapes possible. Their perfectionist approach allows them to make the most of each variety’s strengths. From our elegant Nebbiolo, to our bold Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, we are privileged to work with the grapes from Lanae Ridge Vineyards.

VINES: Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Malbec, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Merlot.

SOIL: Sandy, well-drained soils upon a steep hillside. Ample sunshine allows for full ripening of each variety.

LOCATION: Planted in the wind-blown sand that gathered along an exposed Volcanic Vent on the edges of Idaho Wine Country, this vineyard has a fascinating soil type that produces deep wines. Digging through basalt channels, and shaking sand out of her boots, vintner Sydney Nederend has perfected the art of producing fine wines off this unique site.

WINES: Dark, tannic wines with strong mid-palates, and a lasting finish. SCORIA wines stain our fermenters with their purple hues. Our take on the Malbec from this site sells out quickly each year.

VINES: Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah.

SOIL: Wind-blown sand layered upon volcanic SCORIA rock.

LOCATION: Located adjacent to the West side of our facility. The Williamson Family has been established in the area for over 100 years. Our founder, Greg Koenig sourced some of his first wines from their vineyards.

WINES: Aromatic whites, and smooth reds, Williamson Vineyards has been the vineyard of origin for some of our most award winning wines. Our Riesling Ice Wine comes from the rows of Riesling 30 feet from our crush pad – which makes it perfect for when we pick the grapes in middle of December!

VINES: Syrah, Viognier, Riesling, Sangiovese Rosé.

SOIL: Sandy Loam, perfect for beautiful and aromatic white wines.

Caldwell—At Koenig Winery south of Caldwell, plump, purple grapes are ripe on the vine, but not ready for harvest. “They’re still a few weeks off, said Sydney Weitz Nederend of Koenig-Skoria Vineyards. “This year’s crop is looking awesome,” said Idaho Wine Commission Executive Director Moya Shatz Dolsby. “We had a slow start, but it’s been very even all summer, which is what we want.” Farmers are harvesting the first grapes, but at Koenig, the Nederends say they’re still 3-4 weeks out before they’ll start picking. “They need a little more time on the vine,” said Weitz-Nederend. She says the harvest will start suddenly when the grapes ripen and then they’ll work around the clock to get the crop in. This is a big year at Koenig, the Nederends purchased the Winery earlier this year.
