What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient art, science, and philosophy that emphasizes performing one’s daily responsibilities with awareness, integrity, and compassion. From Sanskrit, the word “yoga” translates as union of the mind, body, and spirit. For many, that includes an ongoing practice of yoga postures, meditation and personal reflection. The practice of yoga illuminates the path of purpose called dharma helping us to orient towards health and happiness in the modern world.
Many Yoga Styles – One Purpose
Yoga is a multifaceted inquiry into the big questions such as Who Am I and What is My Life Purpose. What yoga philosophy makes clear in all styles is that yoga postures are one aspect of the practice of yoga. At True North we offer a diverse yoga posture practice as well as other aspects of yoga led inquiry. All are highly beneficial to the body, mind and spirit.

Wellness Services
What creates a life well lived? Everyone is looking for happiness and contentment yet it seems to be so illusive and fleeting. When we think about sustained good health it’s essential to consider the whole and not just the parts. Integrative means “everything together” or “not in isolation”.
True North Yoga provides a model to help you achieve integrative good health. The 4 Pillars of Health is a road map and accessible to anyone willing to put forward the effort. It’s through wise effort toward a defined intention that creates change.
4 Pillars of Health:
• Movement (yoga)
• Nutrition (Ayurveda)
• Sleep (Relaxation)
• Community (Relationship)
Movement:
Yoga is mindfulness in motion. Yoga cultivates the properties of good physical health while allowing the mind to settle. Yoga provides many benefits to the physical, emotional and mental body. These benefits occur through a consistent yoga practice. To see real change in your life decide to practice at least three days a week for three months. True North Yoga teachers will guide, challenge, inspire and support you on and off the mat.
Nutrition:
Did you know that the shape of your eyes or the coarseness of your hair can give predictable information to help with digestion and diet tendencies? Ayurveda is a Vedic science established thousands of years ago and still practiced today worldwide. Ayurveda is a lens to understand your unique physical constitution and make informed decisions about nutrition rooted in ancient knowledge of the whole individual. Put simply, the science of Ayurveda explains why we eat the foods we eat, why we act the way we do, why we choose the activities and relationships we have. Learning more about Ayurveda allows for many “aha” moments. Knowledge leads to wisdom.
Sleep:
The average person spends about 26 years sleeping in their life which equates to 9,490 days or 227,760 hours. It’s incredible to think that a third of our life is spent outside of wakeful consciousness. For some, sleep doesn’t come easy yet it is vital for the restoration of the body and mind. It can effect our mood, decision making, energy level and so much more. Relaxation practices such as Sleep Yoga, pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation and Yin yoga help to relax the body during the daytime so that sleep comes more naturally in the evening. Finding the balance between effort and relaxation throughout the daytime is vital for internal balance and often leads to better sleep. Students are encouraged to attend a relaxation class such as Sleep Yoga at least once a week for three months for optimal results.
Community:
We aren’t meant to live in isolation. It is in our DNA to gather, engage in activities and support one another. One of the means by which we gain energy and feel supported in our lives is through positive social interaction. Through the challenges of the pandemic the world has been regulated into temporary isolation. We now see the joy that comes from once again being together. Being part of a community is healthy for body, mind and spirit. Yoga practice allows for us to build a relationship with ourselves on the mat while in the company of others. A shared experience.
